3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard)

Colonel David B. Rowland is the 84th Commander, 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), Military District of Washington, Washington, D.C.  He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering United States Military Academy and he was commissioned as an Infantry Second Lieutenant in 1999. Upon completion of the standard courses for an Infantry Second Lieutenant, Col. Rowland reported to 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry (ABN) where he served as a Rifle Platoon Leader and Battalion S1.

Following his time with the 503rd, Col. Rowland reported to 1st Ranger Battalion where he served as a Ranger Platoon Leader and Battalion S5. After completing the Infantry Captain's Career Course (CCC), Col. Rowland returned to the 503rd Infantry, this time to serve as the AS3, Able Company Commander and HHC/173d Commander in the 2nd Battalion. Following service in Italy, Col. Rowland attended graduate school at Georgetown University studying International Affairs and briefly served as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Army.

Following graduation from CGSC in 2011, Col. Rowland reported to 4-9 Infantry (Stryker) where he served as the Battalion Executive Officer from 2011-2013. He then served as the Brigade Executive Officer of the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade from 2013-2014. Col. Rowland was the aide-de-camp to the Commander, United States Army Special Operations Command from 2014-2015. Col. Rowland was also with the Joint Special Operations Command. Col. Rowland previously commanded the 1st Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, where he deployed his Squadron to Iraq and Syria. Col.  Rowland recently served as the Battalion Commander for the 1st Infantry Battalion, 5th Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB) and deployed to Mongolia with SFAB Teams deployed to 11 different countries.

Col. Rowland’s awards include the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Achievement Medal, the Expert Infantryman’s Badge, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Basic Parachutist Wings, Jumpmaster Wings, Military Freefall Wings, Air Assault Wings, and the Ranger Tab.
