Command Sgt. Maj. Alex Collins is a native of Spartanburg South Carolina and he enlisted in the Army in April 1995 as a 13B cannon crewmember. He attended One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and reclassified to a 93C Air Traffic Controller and attended Advanced Individual Training (AIT), in June 2000 at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

Collins has served as #1 Man, Driver, Gunner, Ammunition Team Chief, Ammunition for Howitzer Battery 1/3 Armored Cavalry Regiment, Ground Control Approach/Army Flight Following Supervisor, Tower Chief for I Corps, Multi-National Corps-Iraq Airspace Non-Commissioned Officer In-Charge for III Corps, Tactical Platoon Sergeant for 3-58th Aviation Regiment, Training Non-Commissioned Officer, Facility Chief for B Company 1-11th Aviation Regiment, G3 Air/Aviation Non-Commissioned Officer In-Charge and First Sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Operations Company for 3rd Infantry Division, Air Traffic Control Evaluation Sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, First Sergeant and Command Sergeant Major for 1-11th Aviation Regiment, First Sergeant of B/D Companies 4-4 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, First Sergeant for E Company 52nd Aviation Regiment, Battalion Sergeant Major 3-58th Airfield Operations Battalion and currently Command Sergeant Major 12th Aviation Battalion at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

His stateside assignments include Fort Carson, Colorado; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Rucker, Alabama; Fort Stewart, Georgia; Fort Rucker, Alabama; Fort Carson, Colorado; Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and Fort Belvoir, Virginia. His overseas assignments include Germany and Korea. He has deployed officially to Iraq three times, once to Afghanistan and once to Africa.
