4th Battalion, 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard)

Lieutenant Colonel Gregory C. Holownia is the commander of the 4th Battalion, 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Arlington, Virginia. Originally from East Setauket, New York,  Holownia graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in American History and he commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry.

After completing the Infantry Officer Basic Course and Ranger course, Holownia served as a Rifle Platoon Leader in 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF).  From January 2010 until August 2013, Holownia served in 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, as a Rifle Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer, deploying four more times in support of OEF.

Following the Maneuver Captain’s Career Course, Holownia joined 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Georgia, as the battalion plans officer, and he later commanded a Rifle Company.  In September 2015, Holownia took command of Headquarters Company, Task Force 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment.

Holownia next served in the G-3 Sensitive Activities Directorate of the United States Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  During this time, he completed the Command and General Staff College at Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia, and he also received a master’s degree from the National Defense University.  Following graduate school, Holownia served as the Squadron Operations Officer and later Executive Officer for 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, deploying in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. 

Since July 2020, Holownia has served in the HQDA G-3/5/7 at the Pentagon; first in the Army Operations Center, later as the Executive Officer to the Director of Operations, Readiness, and Mobilization, and most recently as a Global Force Management Officer.

Lt. Col. Holownia’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with “V” Device and Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Meritorious Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Superior Unit Award, the Master Infantryman’s Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Army Staff Identification Badge.  He is also a graduate of the United States Army Advanced Airborne School Jumpmaster Course.
